Picture This: We Can End Poverty 2010

Picture This: We Can End Poverty is a global photo contest seeking to show — in a positive way — what people around the world are doing to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), eight goals agreed on by world leaders to halve extreme poverty by 2015.

The winning photos will be exhibited during the UN MDG Summit and UN General Assembly in September, 2010 in New York, when world leaders will meet to recommit and redouble their efforts in the fight against extreme poverty.

Objective

Photos with people in them, documenting their efforts to make positive changes to end extreme poverty around the world, are required. You may submit up to three different photographs, focusing on one goal.

You may enter only one time and you can only enter only one of the two categories: Professional or Amateur.

The eight goals are:

  • Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
  • Achieve universal primary education
  • Promote gender equality and empower women
  • Reduce child mortality
  • Improve maternal health
  • Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases
  • Ensure environmental sustainability
  • Develop a Global Partnership for Development

Prizes

The first prize in each of the categories (professional, amateur, and “People’s Choice”) will be the latest Olympus cameras and related camera equipment. The second and third prizes for the professional and amateur categories will also be Olympus cameras. The best three works in each category will be displayed on the sponsors’ websites and shown in at least two exhibitions in Japan and the United States. The first prize winners in each category and the People’s Choice winner will be invited to the awards ceremony in New York.

The winning photos will be exhibited during the UN MDG Summit and UN General Assembly in September, 2010 in New York, when world leaders will meet to recommit and redouble their efforts in the fight against extreme poverty.
