Living Aleutian Home Design Competition: Living Building Challenge 2.0

Cascadia Green Building Council, in partnership with the Aleutian Housing Authority, invites the world’s most talented and daring architects and engineers to design an affordable, single-family residence in one of the world’s most challenging environments: Alaska’s Aleutian Islands.

Unshackle your creativity and your applied skills to embrace the challenge of creating an Aleutian house capable of meeting the Living Building Challenge. This is not simply a conceptual competition. An existing house is scheduled for demolition, and a new home will be built on its footprint.

The best design will be constructed and awarded a huge grand prize of $35,000 in cash!

Objective

The Aleutian Housing Authority, which has pledged to help reduce Aleutian fossil energy consumption by 85%, is eager to learn whether ultra-efficient, environmentally sound homes can be developed affordably. This competition is therefore not simply about winning a prize, or even about designing a project that will be built: it is about laying the groundwork for transforming how the Aleutian built environment is created, inhabited and maintained.

Living Aleutian Home Design Competition entries should both inspire and inform. The Competition is meant to encourage design teams to develop a practical, affordable and replicable solution for housing in a very remote community, while achieving all imperatives of the Living Building Challenge 2.0. In addition, to help address housing costs across the region, the Aleutian Housing Authority (AHA) should be able replicate the design, with reasonable modifications for site variability in other Aleutian Communities.
